The Inaugural

"Oy you look too skinny" are the words I hear when I see my Mom or Grandmom. For a Jewish mother, there is nothing better than seeing her son scarf down a large plate of food. At the Jewish delicatessen around the corner, it is her joy to see me finish the over-sized "zaftig" corn beef Reuben. Mom's philosophy is that you can never have too much food. She always cooks extra for dinner, in case anyone is left hungry, which never happens. Luckily for me and her, I love to eat, and appreciate quality and gourmet food.
I'm now in college and do not eat as much with my family. Instead of home cooked meals and delis, I have the dining hall. The d hall has its on and off days. There are days when the food is delicious, like their crab cakes and grass fed beef burgers. There are also days when the food is garbage, like Chicken Finger Friday. Luckily, there are ways to avoid days like these. There's a stove where we can cook eggs, a section where staff can make us sandwiches, and a pizza station. Also, since my buddy has car, we can escape to Panera's or downtown to a restaurant. Every week, I'll be posting college food stories on A Lean and Hungry Look. I want to share with you the good and the bad food that my friends and I experience.

  1. I hear you there. Honestly, I liked Chicken FInger Friday at first but it got real old really quick. I think the food in dhall is generally pretty good in comparison to other schools but at times it can be pretty hit or miss.

  2. Yea I agree. I feel like when they have their good days, they have multiple good options. Whereas, when they have their bad days there is nothing good. So, i resort to cereal.

  4. I agree, dhall definitely has its good and bad days. Chicken Finger Friday is my least favorite but there's always ways to get creative and make your own food! My friends and I made banana's foster the other night on the egg station grill and it was delicious. Can't wait to read your blog!
